Our first litter from 2002 turned eleven years of age yesterday
As we celebrate Maya's birthday today we figured we would send you a note that
she is doing great and is still very playful.
Marc and Caroline from Ottawa.
Nothing brings me greater joy than to receive this kind of note from my puppy owners. Thank you Marc and Caroline.

Here's why all the hard work is
so worthwhile. Congratulations to Nancy and Miss Molly. I should add that working with your dog and training for obedience when done with a positive trainer makes the experience of being a pet owner that much richer and more rewarding.
Hi Rita,
So proud!!!
Molly passed Grade 3 yesterday
with 11 excellence out of 13. She followed me around as if she knew it was time
to perform, she was such a trooper.
All the rest of her class were
large dogs and she made mincemeat out of them.
Remarks from the judges on her
evaluation sheet were….
solid as a rock…super
confident….beautiful distance on the signals…keen to jump…impressive
retrieves………….I could go on and on but modesty prevents me from doing
so.
She has been promoted to Grade
4 and to agility class.
She jumped up on the couch for
the first time this week to our surprise, I guess that comes with her new
confidence. Now we have to figure out how to keep her off.
Thanks for developing such
great pets.
Nancy

Something to think about when you take your puppy home.
While no one wants to encourage a large number of intact animals which creates problems for everyone, waiting until the animal is a bit older may be a good compromise.

On a more positive note
To further enhance our breeding program, and to ensure genetic diversity, we have teamed up with two other breeders to add these two little charmers from Germany to our breeding program. Our newest members of the family, co-owned and living with Lisa Hockin and Maishelle Heath King. Bred by Philippine and Jens Gotemann out of Ghandi of Velvet Dreams and Sandra's Lady Lara.

More on the previous post.
One of the things a puppy owner needs to watch for at this time of year is mushrooms. Puppies tend to try to eat almost anything so watch for those mushrooms that tend to pop-up over night.

The one photo is out of focus, but if you look at her leg you'll see that she has a tan bracelet around her ankle. Her cheeks and possibly her eyebrows may lighten as she matures.

Things you may not know about puppies
1. Puppies are born not fully developed. Their eyes are sealed shut because they need to finish the maturation process. Even at eight weeks when these puppies will go to the ophthalmologist their eyes are not fully mature. Puppy eyes tend to open around two weeks.
2. Their ears are also closed at birth and they can not hear until their ears open somewhere about three weeks.
3. Some breeds are more mature at birth than others, many being able to walk right from birth. Havanese tend not to be able to get up on their feet until sometime between two and four weeks.
4. Puppies are born not able to regulate their own body temperature. For this reason they have to be kept in a temperature regulated room until they are about four weeks. This makes makes them extremely vulnerable to bacteria and viruses. The herpes virus is one of the main threats to a puppy because the body temperature must be over 100 degrees to kill off this virus. The average adult dog body temperature is around 101 degrees.

Supplies
Here is the type of crate that I use. It's about 24 inches long The plastic ones get way to hot in the summer and do not allow enough air flow. This particular model is good and sturdy for travel in a car. You can use it for when the pup first get home by rolling up a blanket like a cigar and placing it around the outside edges of the inside. This creates a den feeling for the puppy. Puppies do not want to soil their dens so it helps train the puppy. You'll want chew toys, not rawhides, but hard rubber items. I like the deer antlers as well. Baron, below saved his owner the money by bringing one back from one of their walks. Some people claim the dogs may break their teeth on them, but my dogs have never had a problem. The most important thing for now is to make sure all their baby teeth fall out on their own. They should all be out by about six months. You'll have to watch the canines carefully because they tend not to fall out and your puppy will end up with eight canine teeth. I'll show you how to loosen them when you are here. You may want to buy a toothbrush and the tooth paste you want to use (I use Petzlife) and just let the puppy chew on the brush so he gets use to it and the taste of the toothpaste. You can start the actual brushing when the dog gets older.
Books
I've ordered a copy of the separation anxiety book for everyone so if you come for a visit before taking your puppy home, please remember to take a copy home with you. It's always best to read up before taking the puppy so you can organize what you have read and decide how you are going to apply the suggestions that the author makes. Also, if you come for a visit please bring a small, newly washed blanket or towel with you. After washing please have your family members handle the blanket with newly washed hands so that the puppies will be exposed to your family odours. Washing is extremely important because of the danger of introducing the parvo virus. Place the blanket in a clean plastic bag and bring it with you for your visit. Just before you come to pick up your puppy I'll reverse the process and have the odours of mom, brothers and sisters, plus Willard and me on the blanket.
I'm getting exciting about bringing the puppies out to the living room and getting them playing with some of the new puppy toys I have for them.

Another Must Read Before Bringing Your Puppy Home
Separation Anxiety is probably one of the biggest problems with a Havanese especially for the first time puppy owner.
I found this book, short, easy to read and helpful.

Notice Terry's brown spot on his face - he has tan points and will develop eyebrows which may or may not stay tan color. The tan may, probably will fade to white.

Naming your puppy
Your puppy will have a distinct name when it is registered with the Canadian Kennel Club.
The rules for that registered name are:
It must include the name Sonrisas as a prefix.
CKC Rules regarding
names state that the name of a dog may contain no more than thirty (30) letters
including spaces, and may not contain cardinal or ordinal
numbers.
Have fun with
this!
A few examples with
call names
are:
Sonrisas Freddie for President - call name
Fred
Sonrisas Hava
Java - call name
Java
Sonrisas The
Whole Enchilada - call name
Taco
Sonrisas Winning
Oscar - call name
Oscar
Not acceptable for CKC
Sonrisas King
George III would not be accepted nor would Sonrisas The Chosen One or Sonrisas
First in My Heart because of the numbers.
Today's weights and video
Somehow two of the puppies seemed to have dissappeared from this video, but I'll try to get those two in the next video.
