Day 8 - Frankie

The pups were born all ranging within a few grams of 7 ounces.  They are now within a few grams of 14 ounces.  They are eating well.  :)
Rather than try to do everybody at once I'll just take pictures and post the ones that turn out well and post video when I can get them moving around a bit, for instance, when mom has been outside and she returns.  There's a mad dash for mom and dinner!

The is the Frankie who was the last pup born.

There seemed to be a problem with the video upload from Sunday so I've put it on YouTube:

The Group of Seven

Bit of a challenge matching photos to puppies, but I think I've got it right and in birth order.  Both Lexie and Lauren were born with a large part of their noses filled with black pigment.  Their birth weights in grams, in the order of their birth were:  Lexie - 191; Lauren - 198; Emily - 186; Tom - 208; Artsie - 182; Fredith - 189; Frankie - 189.  All have gained weight.  Number 4 and 7 are males and the rest are females.

The puppies arrived between five and seven this morning although Lusa was restless from midnight on.  Translate that to mean we  didn't get any sleep last night.  :)  But we are happy to report that there are seven  puppies all weighing around seven ounces, five girls, two boys.  I will have individual pictures a little later today.  This will be the Canadian Group of Seven - we'll just feminize the names.

Puppies

Five girls, two boys, will take a nap and then do pictures.  All black and white I think.

Her temperature has dropped by two degrees so hopefully the puppies will be here by tonight or tomorrow.

Dog Food etc.

What to feed your dog, the eternal dilemma!

For kibble, our dogs are eating a variety of protein sources, either Orijen or Acana which are made by the same company, Champion Pet Foods, here in Canada. All ingredients are made here in Canada as well. The Orijen is higher in protein, but both can be grain free. Both foods are rated five out of five by the Dog Food Advisor. You can read about the author of  this  site by clicking on the links below.

We do not feed puppy food, but the adult food only.

This is the grain free version of Acana

This discusses Orijen

Here is the calculator to help you know how much to feed your adult dog

I allow puppies over three months to eat as much as they want for about a 15 minute time frame twice a day.

In the evening our dogs are given home cooked meat(usually chicken breasts) with veggies, sweet potato, occasionally white potato, and rice.I put the chicken in a pot and cook for about 15 minutes and then throw in everything else and cook it for about 45 minutes. The eggs are boiled separately and chopped then added to the mixture. I then add wild salmon oil and FasTrack (probiotic) to each serving

For their teeth they are given deer antlers which are available at (wild salmon oil is here too): bully sticks. This goes a long way toward keeping their teeth clean.

I also use Petzlife (available in most pet supply stores) to brush their teeth. I apply it along the gums with a Q-tip and then brush/wipe their teeth with a cotton swab or toothbrush. I am now using Leba III as well.

Lusa's tummy full of puppies

Lusa has  developed a little shelf.  I'm beginning to think that maybe there is a seventh puppy in there.
Go here to check out dog food brands. Orijin and Acana all are five star foods.  Both brands are made by Champion Dog Foods and it is made right here in Canada with only Canadian ingredients.

Migo Who was Miguel

Here's Lusa's sister's baby - Migo who is nine months old now.  He looks more like Lusa than Lucy, but we sure hope we get another Irish Pied like Migo in this new batch.

Lusa at almost 7 weeks, 2+ weeks to go.

Lusa is now getting four small meals a day since there is obviously stress on her tummy.  These are the most active pups I've ever seen at just seven weeks,  but Lusa is taking it all in stride and still runs, jumps and plays as usual.
